How to preserve your skin during winter ?

When temperatures start to plummet, and rain and wind become more frequent, the skin on the face, the only part of the body directly exposed to the elements, takes a beating: tight-feeling cheeks, redness, dull complexion, chapped lips… It is essential to care for your face in the cold season to effectively protect your skin. Here are our tips for pampering your skin naturally in winter.
Hydrate and nourish your face
Cold outside, warm inside, the skin on the face, subject to temperature changes, generally develops skin reactions (dryness, itching) in response to the stress it undergoes. That is why it is important to establish a suitable routine during winter to protect it effectively. Discover our routine to keep skin healthy and protect it from the cold.
Healthy winter face routine:
- The first step is to cleanse your face gently, preferably in the evening, ideally with a cold-process soap suited to your skin type and lukewarm water.
- Regular exfoliation of the skin is essential in every season to reveal its radiance, but in winter, doing an exfoliation once a week is even more important. It helps remove dead skin cells, stimulate epidermal renewal, and make it easier for nourishing skincare products to be absorbed, which the skin needs so much.
Be sure to stick to the recommended exfoliation frequency. If done too often, it can irritate and worsen dryness in dry-prone skin or even trigger reactive excess sebum in oily-prone skin. - A properly done exfoliation should be performed on clean skin and followed by a soothing mask. The Terre de Mars Redemption face mask is made from bio-cellulose derived from the extremely fine and delicate fibers of coconut. It will naturally hydrate and plump the skin.
- Overusing plant oils, again to deeply nourish the epidermis. Massaging the face with a facial oil is perfect for restoring softness to dry skin and promoting microcirculation.
- Finish your routine with an organic face cream to hydrate your skin while leaving it soft, velvety, and radiant.
Protect and hydrate your lips
Because the skin on the lips is very thin, it is even more vulnerable than the rest of the face. Winter’s biting cold, as well as poorly adjusted air conditioning or overly strong heating, can irritate your lips and cause chapping. The lips’ only natural protection is a thin layer of oil that we need to care for daily and renew and reinforce regularly.
To restore beautiful lips, hydration is essential. This means drinking plenty of water and applying lip balm regularly, made with natural ingredients.
Our favorite magic ingredient for protecting them during winter is castor oil. You can easily make your own 100% natural, plant-based lip balm to benefit from the exceptional properties of this oil. For a nourishing balm, nothing could be simpler: in a saucepan, mix 1 tablespoon of shea butter, beeswax, and 3 tablespoons of castor oil over very low heat. Once the mixture is smooth, remove from the heat before pouring it into small jars or empty sticks.
Take care of the rest of your body
Pampering your face is great, but don’t forget the rest of your body. Hidden under layers of clothing, our body suffers from the cold and friction and therefore needs our attention too. Giving the body and hands all the nutrients they need, thanks to powerful bioactive ingredients like those found in Resilience cream, will do them the world of good.
Even if the call of a long, steamy bath is tempting in winter, opt for shorter, less hot showers. Water vapour and heat dissolve the protective lipid film of the epidermis. After showering, apply an organic body balm, because it is when the skin is damp that active ingredients penetrate best.
These treatments and tips will help you preserve your skin in winter and have radiant skin for the start of summer. It is also important to keep in mind that beauty starts from within, so in winter, watch your diet (essential fatty acids, oily fish, dried fruit, etc.), drink at least 1.5L of water per day, and take advantage of the cold to hibernate and get plenty of sleep!
