How to make bath salt ?

Bath salts are used for their relaxing and soothing properties. Dispersed in the bath, they help muscles relax while reducing headaches and anxiety. Some experts strongly recommend using bath salts during eczema flare-ups, or in the case of skin conditions, irritation, muscle inflammation, or even arthritis. There are several different bath salts: detox bath salts, toning bath salts, and relaxing bath salts. In this article, we will focus on relaxing bath salts by giving you the list of ingredients needed to make bath salts, a few simple and natural recipes to make at home, as well as some tips for using bath salts so you can become an expert on the subject.

Epsom salts: an essential ingredient in making bath salts

Epsom salt is the key ingredient for making your homemade bath salts: it is a salt derived from minerals. It is rich in magnesium, and can be used both as bath salts and as an exfoliating treatment for the skin, or in cream, balm, or oil form. To make your relaxing bath salts, you will first need Epsom salt, which you will mix with different fragrances, liquids, and/or essential oils. You can find Epsom salt at pharmacies, supermarkets, or specialty stores. Good to know: for an even more natural bath salt, Epsom salt can be used on its own in the bath, without mixing.

Add a few drops of essential oils

Essential oil naturally scents your bath salts while adding relaxing and soothing properties to your mix. A few drops added to your Epsom salt, and your bath salts can already have relaxing properties! As for choosing essential oils, it is up to you to select from hundreds of different essential oils the ones that best match your needs and/or tastes.

DIY relaxing bath salts recipe

We are offering an example recipe for relaxing bath salts to make at home. This recipe is simple and quick: it requires only a few ingredients. To make your bath salts, gather 100g of coarse Guérande salt, 100g of Epsom salt, a teaspoon of vegetable oil (of your choice), a teaspoon of lavender essential oil (soothing and relaxing properties), and a few drops of ylang-ylang essential oil (relieves depressive states). You will also need an airtight glass jar and a spoon to mix everything together.

Preparation

Pour the Guérande salt and Epsom salt into the jar or a bowl and let them dry in a dry place for one to two hours. For the best and quickest result, place your jar near a radiator or dry the salts with a hairdryer. In this way, you can remove the moisture contained in the salts. You can then add your essential oils and the vegetable oil of your choice. To go further, it is also possible to add dried herbs such as lemon verbena or chamomile to your mixture. Mix everything together with a spoon. Once the salts have absorbed the oils, you can pour the mixture into your airtight jar and keep it for up to 6 months.

Use

Pour several tablespoons of your mixture into a hot bath. Stir the bath water so the bath salts can blend evenly into your bath. You can then step into your bath gently: if the water is too hot, do not stay in it for more than about ten minutes.

Possible variations

  • You can replace Epsom salt with a larger amount of coarse salt
  • You can replace lavender and ylang-ylang essential oil with sweet orange or bay essential oil, for example.
  • You can make this recipe without adding essential oils, especially in the case of pregnancy or allergies: why not replace the essential oils with natural flavors?

You now know all the tips for making your own homemade bath salts. The advantage of DIY is being able to create your own blend, made from different scents and properties. You are the one in control when it comes to making your bath salts. To go even further in well-being and relaxation, you can use natural and organic soaps and shampoos like the Irrévérence Bath Ritual Set to revitalize and boost your skin and hair.
